Django templates are infuriating

In App Engine anyway - at least partly because the Django docs online are for the latest version of Django but that's not what App Engine comes with. 

Cue a whole lot of head banging and "why isn't this working?"

Note to self: do as little as possible with the template system; format things with python instead.
