This sounds like the best solution. I personally would prefer choice over something automatic, if only to see what it looks like with the full effects on (even if I couldn't play it like that).


I'd really appreciate a game "self-test" run from the settings screen which quickly runs through a few known pathological cases and comes up with a settings suggestion after that.

I.e. "oh looks like soft shadows/bloom just obliterate your performance or produces bad random stutter, better turn them off. test again"
