Boy, am I dumb.
I could have gotten some good sleep last night - my daughter was sleeping for a change - but instead I found myself playing EV: Nova from her bedtime at 8 all the way to 3 AM.
I didn't even get into the combat system! I spent the whole time exploring, trading, asteroid mining, and trading.
Normally I'm not terribly susceptible to RPGish grinding - maybe it had something to do with the rate at which trading could earn me cash (I found a run where I could make a 50% profit every time) - exponentially increasing your money sure feels good. Of course, the ships get exponentially more expensive, so it's all illusion.
Like Uplink, the game is dotted or laced with tiny story missions. "Like raisins in pudding," as Erik Bethke said once.
I'm going back in for more, now.
Awwwww yeah. EV Nova really has that "just one more turn" thing down. Not sure if the production value justifies the $30 price tag, but when you have the itch you've just got to scratch it. I've got a sweet Cambrian with 3500 units of cargo space, $55.3M in the bank, and the best contraband trade routes.

OT: your daughter sleeps from 8PM? You're lucky man! :)

I'm not sure how it works but it seems to have some kind of economy, also: it didn't let me milk that 50% profit trade run forever. I'm both sad and happy about that.
